Our Story: From the Desert Sands of Doha to the Shores of Hua Hin
Life has a funny way of leading you down paths you never expected. For us, that path led from a comfortable life in the United States to over seven years in the bustling, futuristic city of Doha, Qatar. We embraced the expat life, building a community and a home in the heart of the Middle East. It was an incredible chapter, filled with professional growth, cultural discovery, and friendships that spanned the globe.
But as we approached retirement, we felt a familiar pull—the desire for a new kind of adventure. We loved our time in Doha, but we dreamed of a place with a gentler pace, where lush landscapes met the sea, and where our retirement savings could stretch further without sacrificing quality of life. The question wasn’t if we would move, but where.
Our search began. We spent countless hours researching, creating spreadsheets, and talking to expats all over the world. We wanted a place that offered not just affordability, but also excellent healthcare, a vibrant culture, and a welcoming community. Southeast Asia called to us, and after an exploratory trip, one place captured our hearts completely: Hua Hin, Thailand.
It wasn’t just the stunning beaches or the world-class golf courses. It was the genuine warmth of the Thai people, the incredible food, and the feeling of peace we felt the moment we arrived. We knew we had found our next home.
Make no mistake, the transition wasn’t without its challenges. Navigating the visa process felt like a full-time job, and figuring out the healthcare system was a steep learning curve. But every hurdle we overcame only made us more confident in our decision and more passionate about helping others do the same. That’s why we created Expat Retirement Chronicles—to share the real, unfiltered story of what it takes to build a new life in the Land of Smiles.
Meet the Chroniclers: Kevin & Camille
Kevin:
After a long career as an engineer in construction, I was ready to trade in my briefcase for a passport and a pen. I’m the lead writer and researcher behind the blog, driven by a passion for planning and a desire to demystify the process of moving abroad. My goal is to give you the practical, no-nonsense advice I wish I’d had when we started our journey. When I’m not writing, you can usually find me traveling with my wife, exploring Hua Hin local restaurants, meeting new people on a golf course, or planning our next weekend trip. I’m the one who will strike up a conversation at the local market, find the hidden-gem cafes, and encourage us to try something new.
Camille:
I’ve always been the organizer in our relationship! While Kevin was buried in spreadsheets and the dreamer, I was the one taking care of the household, the food, the dogs, and keeping a eye on the books. I see myself as our family’s “Chief Reality Officer.” I’m the one who turns the dream into a financial reality.
